Today I received an email from the mother of our children with the message Happy 4th of July. This was my response…
I’m going to piss a lot of people off with this email but as an ex-marine who served in Vietnam I feel I have a “right” to sound off. I used to feel patriotic about America. Whenever the Marine Corps Hymn was played I stood at attention and saluted. I want to be able to do that again in good conscious. About 18 months ago I started doing research of how we got where we are today. A good part of our economic situation today started during the Reagan years when we started balancing our budget with deficit spending. You may disagree with this and call me un-American but look it up. Deficit spending in our budget was used to build our military to unbelievable levels to where today the US spends more on the military than all the rest of the world combined and for what? I wrote about my frustrations on my blog (http://ardassociates.com/TCTW/wordpress/?p=348) a couple of weeks ago. I empathize with our soldiers in uniform. Associated Press released the follow article a few weeks ago. “More active-duty US troops have committed suicide this year than have been killed in battle. There have been 154 suicides among troops through last week – an average of one a day – compared with 124 US military fatalities in Afghanistan”. This fact never was presented in the media news reports… why not?
This election we’ll all have to follow our conscious and for many of us, it’ll cause a lot of discomfort. For what we believed in is not what is real. It’s not we’ve been told. It’s not the American way.
Deb, you’ll probably take me out of your contacts folder, which is OK but as the mother of our children I will always love you.
In November 2011, I sent the following letter to the Editor at the Denver Post and it was selected to be printed.
Recently I read an article stating that America is wallowing in crony capitalism and I agreed. We are experiencing our current political and financial dysfunction because “WE” failed to do due diligence in the voting booth. Our fore-fathers created a Republic with the hope that ethics in the powerful would be overseen by the three branches of government. What they couldn’t foresee was how the powerful would use technology to spread fear across the land and therefore have “THE PEOPLE” follow whoever told them that they would make them safe. Do you remember saying this in school?
I pledge alliance to the flag of
the United States of America and
to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.
I can no longer say this without reservations. I hope WE THE PEOPLE get our act together this next election for I would like to teach the Pledge of Allegiance to my grandchildren with pride.
As you watch the fireworks tonight, feel good that we live in America. But to those of us who lived through the Sixties and Seventies; do you remember those tumultuous years? Civil Rights, Vietnam, Watergate. We were reminded where we were going by a number of musical artists here’s two…
Have a Happy 4th of July and keep this in mind when you vote this Fall.
